MARKMAKING

I explored rhythm by studying bird song spectrographs, which visually represent the unique shapes of sound from the environment I was experiencing

My visual language evolved to incorporate colour and the marks from my initial landscape drawings transitioned into abstract forms through the technique of mirroring.

I explored using light, shadows, and layering techniques, while also trying out different materials to enhance the work.

this work was one I had the privilege of seeing in person back in 2018 and then invigilating as part of Hospitalfield's summer festival. McGurn's work was breathtakingly beautiful. the amount of painting and detail was undeniably impressive.

France-Lise McGurn is a contemporary female Scottish artist who uses painting like a form of drawing. Real life experiences inform her bright fun work.

her work is relevant in more than one way to my own. the colour, scale and slightly abstract way of depicting subject matter. although McGurns style is more impressionistic it still retains lots of movement in the mark making, creating an engaging and lively work. during her exhibition with her late mother ' matching mother/daughter tattoos' she delves into the idea of belonging and the tension that can come with mothers and their daughters.

my work also deals with the idea of mother daughter relationships. throughout the year it. began through birds and then slowly shifted into the broader idea of home and the association of safety.

SHIRLEY CRAVEN

while visiting the Whitworth I discovered artist Shirley Craven who uses textiles to explore mark making. in this specific piece she has used giant rolls of paper. this use of scale inspired my work in the degree show. the impact of the marks even feet above my head.
